The importance of emotional well being

Body & Mind
Almost one in three people suffers from a mental illness in the course of their lives - and the numbers are rising. Nevertheless, the importance of mental health is far too often underestimated. Because health is based on many factors.

Again and again, people come to a point where they decide in favour of their profession to the detriment of their physical and mental health. In a direct comparison, this obviously sounds unreasonable, but the situation does not usually look so clear in advance. Time and performance pressure, high work load and the general feeling of stress are often not recognized as warning signs. Even the healthiest person can only deal with stress and pressure for a limited time.

And this is by no means limited to the job alone. Private life can also be stressful. It is not for nothing that psychological illnesses of every kind are increasingly diagnosed. Depression, bipolar disorders, burnout and countless other problems are among the most common diseases worldwide.

One of the reasons is that often the emotional health is not sufficiently cared for and appreciated.

Emotional well-being vs. health

Health is defined by the World Health Organization in its constitution as follows: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity". In addition, many definitions include general satisfaction with one's own life and achievements.

It is important to recognize that these are explicitly not objective characteristics. People can feel unhealthy and ill, even if they have nothing physically wrong with them and others envy them for their lives. A good job, a family, friends, money - all these things are not always enough for ones mental health. It is crucial to take care of your emotions and your soul life in the same way.

Key elements of emotional well-being

Carol Ryff, Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madin and renowned for her study of mental well-being, defines six elements of emotional health:

  • Self-acceptance
  • Personnel growth
  • Purpose in life
  • Environmental mastery
  • Autonomy

Positive relations with others

Probably nobody will ever feel fully satisfied in all six areas and that is not the point. In any case, the needs of each individual can be very different. It is much more important to have a real sense of the multitude of happiness factors. Those who are mainly concerned with self-acceptance and their personal development may come to a point where they lack a strong social fabric.

Increasing your mental health

It is therefore important to pay attention to all elements of your emotional well-being and find out what the most important factor is individually. If there is an imbalance or a feeling of being under a particular strain, the emotional health should be actively promoted. To achieve this, however, the goal must also be formulated and pursued. It is often not enough to avoid negative experiences. Instead, one must work positively on one's own happiness and self-confidence.

This includes communicating not only to the inside but also the outside. Mental illnesses and emotional depths are not taboo topics or weaknesses. Every person experiences phases of depression in his or her life and should not go through this alone. There is no reason to hide your situation and feelings from friends and also colleagues.

Talking openly and attentively about one's condition is the first and perhaps most important step in increasing one's emotional health. But of course this alone is not enough. Improving one's emotional well-being means working actively on oneself.

However, many people find it difficult to find time for themselves in everyday life. But especially in stressful times it is important to look inside. It can therefore help to consciously apply the brakes during a holiday or a cure. In the Waldhotel, for example, we offer the Mindfulness Pro programme. Its aim is to explore your resting potential with professional and experienced help and to find your balance again. At the same time, it is also important to learn how to find relaxation and peace in everyday life.

Our Programmes for emotional well being

Many people use techniques such as yoga, relaxation exercises and autogenic training to find their way to their positive emotions. Reducing stress and actively taking care of oneself are important elements of a healthy psyche. But also the interaction of body and mind should not be underestimated.

Sufficient and restful sleep and a healthy diet help to gather emotional strength and meet the challenges of professional and private life in a stronger way. Sport is also a good method, as it not only actively improves physical health, but also releases happiness hormones.

Which way is the right one for you can only be decided by yourself. There are many ways to happiness. The important thing is to start listening to yourself in time. Only a healthy life can also be a happy life in the long run and this starts inside you.
